AMSOIL has a long heritage in racing. The company's involvement peaked in the 1980's with the sponsorship of such racing greats as three-time Indianapolis 500 champion Bobby Unser and two-time Indy Champion Al Unser, Jr. The Unser connection also included Bobby, Jr., who won the famous Pike's Peak Hill Climb in 1981. AMSOIL brought its own car to "The Brickyard" in 1980. Dick Ferguson qualified the "AMSOIL Special" for the "Greatest Spectacle in Racing." Unfortunately the dream was shortlived due to a crash.
AMSOIL was a major sponsor of American Speed Association racing which featured future NASCAR superstars Alan Kulwicki, Dick Trickle and Mark Martin. In fact, a die-cast replica of Martin's blue Camaro with an AMSOIL logo emblazoned on the hood has been available in NASCAR memorabilia shops and on-line. AMSOIL racing brings back names like Dave Watson, Bob Senneker, Buddy Schrock and Butch Miller. When he wasn't driving or working on racecars, Watson was answering questions for AMSOIL Pipeline readers.
AMSOIL wasn't just into automobile racing. The First in Synthetics ventured into powerboat racing with the first family of the sport, the Seebolds, with Mike Seebold piloting.
